The 15-year-old survivor of the war in the Gaza Strip has won a gold medal in the second phase of the Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, known as OMASP 2026.

A Long Journey from Gaza to Brazil

Tala’s story is more than one of academic achievement. She and her family had to leave Gaza amid war conditions that threatened their lives, going through a terrifying evacuation via the Rafah crossing. Upon arriving in Brazil, the family had to start completely from zero: a new language, a new education system, and a social environment entirely foreign to them.

Tala’s father, Mohammed Awad, described the journey as extremely difficult. He said the family left Gaza carrying deep fear and pain, leaving behind their home and their entire life, after surviving a war that showed no mercy to children or parents alike. Still, he emphasized that moving to Brazil also became a chance to save his children from fear and the threat of death.

Rebuilding a Life in a New Country

Since arriving in Brazil, Tala quickly adapted—learning Portuguese and adjusting to an education system entirely different from the one she knew in Gaza. The process wasn’t instant, but little by little she began to rediscover the sense of safety that war had stripped away.

According to her father, the war in Gaza had stolen the childhoods of many children, but in Brazil, Tala found a safe space to learn, dream, and prove herself. He described her recovery as a gradual journey—step by step, she came back to life and rebuilt her confidence.

The Moment of Victory

When the news of her win arrived, the family was overcome with emotion. Mohammed Awad said they received the news with tears of joy even before they could find the words, and that his sense of pride was almost too large to hold.

Tala herself, in an interview, recalled that she could hardly believe her achievement at first. She felt that all her hard work and studying had finally paid off, and the first thing she thought of was telling her parents—because they were the ones who always encouraged her and told her that success was possible no matter the circumstances.

A Message for the Children of Gaza

Achieving success in a new country hasn’t made Tala forget where she came from. She had a special message for the children still in Gaza: never lose hope. She acknowledged that war is an incredibly difficult thing, having lived through it herself, but urged them to keep dreaming, stay committed to their studies, and hold on to their ambitions—because success remains possible even after the most difficult circumstances.

Mohammed Awad echoed a similar message to the people of Gaza more broadly. He stressed that despite the immense suffering caused by war, it can never truly strip away a people’s dignity or will to live. For this family, Tala’s achievement stands as proof that a child from Gaza can rise from beneath the rubble and turn fear into real accomplishment.

An Identity That Never Fades

Even while building a new life in Brazil, the Awad family insists that Palestine remains at the core of their identity. To them, Palestine is not simply a place of origin—it is memory, blood, and identity, something they continue to pass on. Tala is being raised to understand that every success she achieves in Brazil is also a success for Palestine, a way of keeping their language, story, and roots alive far from home.

The family hopes to build a secure future for their children in Brazil, becoming respected members of Brazilian society, without ever letting go of their loyalty to their homeland and the Palestinian cause.

Tala Mohammed Awad’s story is a reminder that behind the statistics of war lie individuals with dreams, determination, and the strength to rise again. The gold medal she won in São Paulo is not just a personal victory—it is also a symbol of hope for other children in Gaza still grappling with the aftermath of war.

Sources: Middle East Monitor, Gaza Media

Amid the rubble and trauma left behind by war, a story of hope and resilience has emerged from a Palestinian teenager named Tala Mohammed Awad.
